\u201cIn light of changing realities, the play written by Ibsen in 1881 gains astonishing topicality: there is no play more apt about AIDS than \u2018Ghosts\u2019 (Einar Schleef). The socially critical approach of the piece\u2014at the center of which\n is, among other things, the medical history of a young man\u2014can, from its concrete (Norwegian) setting, be transferred to universal connections that still shape our reality today.
<\/span><\/p>\n

The heart of the book is the excitingly readable and meticulous documentation of the stage history of this family drama\u2014from its beginnings (for example, the world premiere on May 20, 1882, before Scandinavian immigrants in Chicago),\n through censorship bans, controversies and repeals, to the opening performance of the \u2018Freie B\u00fchne\u2019 in Berlin in 1889; the opening of the \u2018Berliner Kammerspiele\u2019 in 1906 under the direction of Max Reinhardt (with a stage design by\n Edvard Munch); as well as a temporary decline of interest in Ibsen and his plays until the post-war era. A rediscovery of Ibsen\u2014both on stage and in \u2018philological research\u2019\u2014can be traced from Peter Stein\u2019s seven-hour Peer Gynt production\n at Berlin\u2019s \u2018Schaub\u00fchne\u2019 (1970\/71).<\/p>\n

Marc Boettcher\u2019s dramaturgical work becomes indispensable for anyone who wants to examine the work and impact of \u2018Ghosts\u2019 in a nuanced and comprehensive way. The appendix contains censorship files, reviews, images, and other materials\n that meaningfully illustrate this remarkable insight into its stage history. Ibsen wrote to his publisher: \u2018My book belongs to the future.\u2019 Indeed.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n
